Song For a Fifth Child

Song For a Fifth Child
  by Ruth Hamilton. 1958

Mother, oh Mother, come shake out your cloth
empty the dustpan, poison the moth,
hang out the washing and butter the bread,
sew on a button and make up a bed.
Where is the mother whose house is so shocking?
She’s up in the nursery, blissfully rocking.

Oh, I’ve grown shiftless as Little Boy Blue
(lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
Dishes are waiting and bills are past due
(pat-a-cake, darling, and peek, peekaboo).
The shopping’s not done and there’s nothing for stew
and out in the yard there’s a hullabaloo
but I’m playing Kanga and this is my Roo.
Look! Aren’t her eyes the most wonderful hue?
(lullaby, rockaby, lullaby loo).
The cleaning and scrubbing will wait till tomorrow,
for children grow up, as I’ve learned to my sorrow.
So quiet down, cobwebs. Dust go to sleep.
I’m rocking my baby and babies don’t keep.

Little Tears. Harold King of England is Dead.

Harold King of England died today. And for the first time my Little Man sat in tears. He asked to be excused from narrating his death. He has narrated death before, but Harold.... Harold was his hero more than Alfred and even Arthur. Maybe is was that Duke William had won. Maybe it was that ds really thought he would win, seeing it as good triumphing over evil. So my little man narrated before the death and after the death--the burial, but he would not narrate the death. We had to sit and snuggle for a bit and then take a popsicle break. My sweet love.

Growing Pains

Sweet Cohen jumped from the couch Saturday evening. Poor darling. Just watching him land wrenched my stomach. The x-rays showed no broken bones, but he is unable to put weight on it so we're treating as a fracture for now. The first two days he relied mainly on others to transport him from place to place. He was either carried or pulled around in the wagon. As the pain has subsided he has tired of waiting for his slow-moving attendants and began to get around with a modified crab-walk. He goes all over the house and backyard. We try to help him, but he often adamantly refuses.

 His chariot of choice.
He doesn't seem to be suffering too badly although it definitely hurts when he tries to stand on it. Thankfully he tried twice and no more. He seems to only be upset when he can't keep up with the "Bigs".

We follow up with the doctor on Friday afternoon.

My Bullet Journal

I need simplicity. My bu is a simple journal that I find at Barnes and Noble. It cost my $5 and seemed like an inexpensive experiment. It was to be my "practice" journal which soothed my perfectionist tendencies, but it turns out I really like it. The lines are very light. And I've held my breath and drawn right over those lines for sketches and such. :D I really like that it has a strap that holds it closed.

Here are some of my additions:

A year-at-a-glance calendar glued to the inside cover.
(never mind the highlighted areas. this is my daddy's work schedule and he sends me one of these calendars every year so I know when I can call him :) The calendar happened to be the perfect size and I kept losing it.)
On the opposing page is simply evidence to my love for all things AO. :D
 Key page
 Index
I added 12 Month-at-a-Glance Pages to the front of mine which solved my longer range planning problem. It also helps me to look back and see some of the projects we enjoyed in the past. (Christmas books for example.)
My month-at-a-glance page complete with notes for making my own hummus in an extra space.
This is my weekly spread. I don't always highlight. Sometimes it just helps me "see" better.
Interspersed throughout my journal are occasional empty spaces. These seem like the perfect spots for a doodle from a child who is having a bit of trouble being still or who just needs to share a picture. :)
